INSPIRATION

Roots shows what we never really see: the roots and branches of the same being, brought together in a single gesture, as if the bottom and the top of all life were in the end only one and the same story. The tree unfolds in both directions at once, sinking in and rising simultaneously, without anyone being able to say where one begins and where the other ends.

This work speaks of what forms us on a deep level: our heritage, our attachments, everything that fed us even before we were aware of it — and that continues, silently, to support each of our upward aspirations. We never grow alone, regardless of what precedes us; we grow because something, somewhere, anchors us enough that we can unfold without fear.

Beyond this intimate dimension, Roots is also a tribute to the tree itself, long before it became a metaphor. For hundreds of millions of years, trees have shaped our planet: they enabled the very appearance of the air we breathe, regulate the climate, retain the soil, and shelter an immense portion of terrestrial biodiversity. They are the silent witnesses of all human history, having traversed the centuries long before us and, for some, long after us. Protecting them is no longer just an ecological issue among others: it directly conditions our own survival, and that of the generations that will follow us. Sculpting a tree is also a reminder of this silent debt we owe to it, and the urgency of preserving it.

The multiplicity of branches, all different and unique in their trajectory, finally evokes the diversity of what makes up a life, a family, a personal story: each branch starts from the same trunk, but chooses its own direction, its own growth rhythm.

Designed for a wall installation, Roots invites us to take a different perspective on our own roots — and on those, even older, that support the entire living world.

Made from solid bronze using the traditional lost-wax technique, Roots reveals the natural shade of raw bronze, which is refined by the casting process.
